Man takes own life in Imo over hardship, family neglect

A man in his 50s, identified simply as Odomma, has reportedly taken his own life in the Amakpu Okuku community, Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State.

The father of four, who earned a living selling water in jerry cans and buckets, was found hanging in an uncompleted building near his home on Friday morning. Residents said he had been battling financial hardship and could no longer provide for his family.

According to villagers, Odomma had previously threatened suicide about three months ago, lamenting that his wife and children had allegedly stopped giving him food due to his inability to cater for them.

A community member, Ikenna, said the deceased had confided his frustrations to friends.

“He said if the situation continued, he would take his life. We advised him to report to the village head, but sadly he chose this path,” Ikenna told our correspondent.

Eyewitnesses said scores of residents thronged the scene after the discovery, many filming the body with their phones.

Described as hardworking and widely patronised for his affordable water supply, Odomma had, however, shown signs of depression in recent months.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer for Imo State, Henry Okoye, said he was yet to confirm the incident with the Divisional Police Officer in Owerri West. Subsequent calls to his phone went unanswered.
