Man Takes Own Life Over ₦500,000 Gambling Debt in Abuja

A young man identified as Stephen Chidubem has tragically taken his own life over a gambling-related debt amounting to ₦500,000 in Abuja.

The incident occurred at his residence on Abba Street, behind the Anglican Church in Saburi 2, a suburban area of the capital. The development was disclosed on Thursday by Lake Chad security analyst and counter-insurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, via his X (formerly Twitter) handle.

According to Makama, Chidubem died by suicide, reportedly hanging himself with a rope tied to a ceiling fan.

Emergency responders who arrived at the scene evacuated his body to the Kubwa General Hospital, where a medical doctor confirmed him dead. His remains have since been deposited in the hospital’s mortuary for an autopsy.

A suicide note was recovered at the scene, in which Chidubem attributed his action to an overwhelming gambling addiction. He expressed regret over his debts and the pain caused to those around him.

The note read in part:

“Sorry to everyone who cared. I can’t continue putting people in trouble because of my gambling addiction. Please forgive me, Elvis, Paul, and all I’m owing. And you, Bishop Andy Ero, give the balance of ₦507,500 to Elvis or Paul.”
