In a horrifying attack that has sent shockwaves through Anambra State, unidentified gunmen unleashed deadly violence on Monday evening in Ogboji community, located in Orumba South Local Government Area.

Fusion Chronicles Nigeria Newspaper gathered that the assailants, driving two Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs), stormed a gathering and opened fire indiscriminately, killing multiple people on the spot. The meeting was reportedly attended by individuals believed to be of Ebonyi State origin.

Although the exact motive remains unclear, speculation is rife. Some sources suggest the massacre may be linked to renewed efforts to enforce a now-banned sit-at-home protest, while others believe it may have stemmed from internal conflict, especially since the attackers allegedly demanded the meeting’s minutes before opening fire.

Gruesome footage circulating on social media shows a chilling scene of lifeless bodies scattered across the ground, accompanied by harrowing cries from bystanders.

Police authorities in Anambra have since confirmed the attack, though they report a slightly lower death toll than circulating online. According to a statement issued by the Anambra State Police Command spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, 10 people were killed and nine others sustained serious injuries.

Ikenga condemned the brutal act, describing it as an unprovoked assault on peaceful citizens. “The armed attackers arrived in two SUVs and suddenly opened fire on the unsuspecting group. Victims were immediately rushed to the hospital, but tragically, 10 were confirmed dead,” he stated.

He added that a combined police and security task force has secured the area and launched a manhunt for the killers, vowing that justice will be served.

The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at a local morgue, as the community reels in fear and mourning from the senseless bloodshed.
