Mother, son, two others killed in Benue herders’ attack

Suspected armed herders on Wednesday killed a woman, her son, and two others in separate attacks on Egwuma and Ogbai communities in Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State.
Locals said the attackers stormed the villages in the afternoon, leaving two other residents missing as of press time.
A resident of Egwuma, who identified himself as Inalegwu, told reporters that the victims were ambushed while working on their farms.
He said, “The herders attacked Egwuma and Ogbai communities today. They killed a woman and her son on their farm, and two others at Ogbai. Two people are still missing, and we are searching for them.”
Confirming the incident, Agatu LGA Chairman, Melvin James, described the killings as “senseless and barbaric.”
“This was an unprovoked attack on innocent people. How could anyone kill a mother and her son while they were working on their farm?” he said.
James noted that security personnel had been active in the area but were patrolling other villages when the assailants struck. He added that poor road networks had hampered security response.
When contacted, Benue Police Command spokesperson, SP Catherine Anene, said she was yet to receive a full briefing on the incident.
