Motorist killed as SUV crashes into commercial bus at Mile 2

A fatal road accident occurred on Monday at Volkswagen Bus Stop, inward Mile 2, Lagos, when a Toyota Highlander (APP 150 EY) rammed into a stationary commercial bus, killing its driver.

The crash, which happened in the early hours, was reportedly caused by the SUV’s high speed before the driver lost control and hit a painted T4 commercial bus (KJA 328 XH) that was indiscriminately picking up passengers by the roadside.

The SUV driver died instantly from the impact. Officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) promptly arrived at the scene, secured the area, and evacuated the remains, which were handed over to Ojo Police Division and later deposited at the C-Niger Mortuary, Abule Ado.

The accident caused a heavy traffic gridlock along the busy corridor, but LASTMA personnel coordinated clearance and supervised the towing of the damaged vehicles to the Ojo Police Division for further investigation.

LASTMA’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, condoled with the bereaved family and condemned both reckless driving and the unsafe practice of picking passengers outside designated stops.

He also cautioned motorists against overspeeding and stressed the need to always ensure vehicles, especially braking systems, are roadworthy before travel.

“The sanctity of human life must never be compromised by recklessness on our highways. The Lagos State Government, through LASTMA, will continue to intensify enforcement and sustain public enlightenment to prevent avoidable tragedies,” Bakare-Oki said.
