NAFDAC Destroys ₦91 Million Worth of Tramadol Seized by Customs in Kano
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has incinerated a massive haul of 491,000 tablets of Tramadol 225mg, with an estimated street value of ₦91 million, in Kano State.
Each packet contained 100 tablets — 10 sachets of 10 tablets — bringing the total to 491,000 tablets. The destruction exercise took place at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital using a high-capacity incinerator.
Yusuf Idris, Deputy Comptroller of Enforcement at the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) for the Kano/Jigawa Command, confirmed that the illegal drugs were intercepted on May 28 and handed over to NAFDAC for destruction.
According to Idris, the drugs were being smuggled into Nigeria in large quantities for illicit resale and use among abusers, thereby aggravating the country’s ongoing security challenges.
“We intercepted the consignment when unscrupulous elements attempted to smuggle it into Nigeria.
The culprits abandoned the consignment when overwhelmed by NCS operatives.

The duty value of this consignment would have been N91,000,000.00,” he said.
Director General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, praised the collaboration between NAFDAC and the Customs Service, describing the operation as a model of strategic partnership aimed at curbing illicit drug trafficking.
“We remain committed to strengthening this partnership, in line with our national action plan and memorandum of understanding between the two agencies of government.
The agency wishes to reiterate its commitment to safeguarding the health of all Nigerians,” said Dr. Martins Iluyomade, NAFDAC’s Director of Investigation and Enforcement, who represented the DG.
NAFDAC is urging members of the public to report suspicious drug-related activities to the nearest agency office for swift action.
