NAFDAC Reports Activist VeryDarkMan to Security Agencies Over Alleged Inciting Comments on Onitsha Drug Market Raid

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has officially reported Nigerian social media activist, VeryDarkMan, to national security agencies following his recent comments on the agency’s drug enforcement operations in Onitsha, Anambra State. The activist is accused of making “inciting and misleading statements” that, according to the agency, could potentially undermine public trust in regulatory authorities and jeopardize national security efforts.

In a detailed statement released on Monday, NAFDAC expressed strong disapproval of the comments made by VeryDarkMan—whose real name is not publicly confirmed—regarding the agency’s crackdown on the illegal sale and distribution of unregistered and counterfeit pharmaceutical products in the popular Bridgehead Market, Onitsha. The agency described the activist’s commentary as not only factually incorrect but also dangerously inflammatory.

NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, said the agency is determined to ensure that its enforcement activities are not misrepresented or politicized. “Our actions in Onitsha are part of a nationwide effort to rid the country of fake, substandard, and potentially deadly drugs. Any attempt to mislead the public or incite unrest in the name of activism will be dealt with in accordance with the law,” she stated.

The agency confirmed that it had submitted a formal complaint to relevant security agencies, including the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigerian Police Force, urging them to investigate VeryDarkMan’s activities and assess the potential threats posed by his social media engagements. According to NAFDAC, the activist’s claims not only mischaracterize the agency’s operations but also embolden criminal networks involved in the illicit drug trade.

VeryDarkMan, known for his controversial online presence and outspoken advocacy on societal issues, had posted several videos criticizing the NAFDAC-led raids, alleging harassment of traders and calling into question the motives behind the operation. His videos, which quickly went viral, sparked mixed reactions from Nigerians—some supporting his stance while others condemned what they viewed as an irresponsible distortion of facts.

Legal analysts suggest that while the activist has a right to free speech, the gravity of the allegations and the context in which they were made could warrant a thorough legal review. If found culpable, he may face charges relating to incitement, misinformation, and obstruction of government operations.

This development marks another flashpoint in the ongoing debate over the limits of digital activism in Nigeria. It also underscores the growing tension between state agencies and a new generation of influencers who wield significant power in shaping public opinion through social media platforms.

As of press time, VeryDarkMan has not issued an official response to the allegations or the reported complaint to security agencies. NAFDAC has reiterated its commitment to continue sanitizing Nigeria’s drug markets and has called on citizens and civil society to support lawful efforts aimed at protecting public health.
