NAFDAC Seizes 10,000 Cartons of Unregistered Tomato Paste, Cosmetics in Lagos

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has confiscated more than 10,000 cartons of unregistered tomato paste and cosmetic products during a raid at the Lagos Trade Fair Market.
The five-day operation, led by NAFDAC’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate, targeted the cosmetics section of the market. Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, the Director of Investigation and Enforcement, Dr. Martins Iluyomade, said the exercise was part of ongoing efforts to clear Nigerian markets of unregistered and potentially harmful products.
“We seized over 10,000 cartons of unregistered tomato paste, along with cosmetics such as creams, soaps, body sprays, washes, air fresheners, and toothpaste,” Iluyomade said. “The safety of these products cannot be guaranteed as they have not undergone regulatory scrutiny.”
He stressed that removing unsafe goods from circulation was crucial to safeguarding public health, warning that fatalities from substandard medicines, cosmetics, and unsafe foods were higher than those caused by Boko Haram.
Iluyomade revealed that a newly formed multi-agency task force would enhance surveillance against substandard medicines and unsafe processed foods nationwide. He also noted that NAFDAC’s partnership with the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) was improving border control measures.
“We are working tirelessly to stop falsified and unregistered items from entering the country. Our MoU with the Customs Service is yielding results as they have handed over several seized fake products to us, while we have also transferred some to them,” he said.
