Governor Mutfwang Hosts Presidential Committee on Livestock Reforms, Highlights Plateau’s Potential to Lead Nigeria’s Livestock Development

Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang of Plateau State has reiterated his administration’s dedication to laying a strong foundation for livestock development in Nigeria.

He made this commitment during a courtesy visit and stakeholders’ engagement forum at the New Government House in Rayfield, Jos. The event featured the Presidential Livestock Reforms Implementation Committee, led by Prof. Attahiru Jega.

Governor Mutfwang praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for introducing practical measures to rejuvenate the livestock sector. He emphasized that these reforms could not only resolve the persistent farmer-herder conflicts but also significantly boost the nation’s economy.

“I commend Mr. President for taking decisive action. If anyone must champion this cause, it is us in Northern Nigeria,” the Governor stated. “This initiative holds immense potential to reduce conflicts, generate employment, enhance our GDP, and foster technological advancements.”

He also highlighted Plateau State’s strategic advantages, such as its skilled workforce, expertise, and favorable climate, which position it as a key driver of livestock reforms. The Governor announced plans to establish the Ministry of Livestock Development by January 2025 to spearhead these efforts.

“We will adapt this national initiative to suit our local realities and move forward collectively. True security is not the presence of soldiers but the absence of conflict. Our focus must be on strategies that foster peace while building a productive and profitable livestock ecosystem,” he said.

Prof. Attahiru Jega, Co-Chairman of the Presidential Livestock Reforms Implementation Committee, commended Governor Mutfwang for his dedication to maximizing the sector’s potential. He assured the Governor of the committee’s full support in transforming Plateau State into a model for livestock development.

“Plateau State has been identified as a leader in this initiative,” Prof. Jega remarked. “The President established this committee in July 2024 to explore opportunities in the livestock sector. A fully developed sector will not only create jobs and improve productivity but also drive economic growth across the country.”

He added that the committee is engaging stakeholders nationwide to promote the reforms and unlock the sector’s economic and social benefits.

Hon. Ishaku Bugama, Plateau State’s Commissioner of Agriculture, also expressed confidence in the state’s capacity to implement impactful livestock reforms and deliver results that benefit the nation.
