NANS Demands Probe as NYSC Fails to Pay ₦77,000 Allowance, Cites Fund Delays

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has urged the Federal Government to investigate the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) over the delay in implementing the newly approved ₦77,000 monthly allowance for corps members.

The association expressed concern that, despite the Federal Government’s approval of the increase from ₦33,000 to ₦77,000, which was supposed to take effect in July 2024, the NYSC has yet to begin payment.

According to the NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, the delay is due to the non-release of necessary funds.

In a statement issued on Sunday by Felicia Akinbodunse, NANS National Vice President for Inter-Campus Affairs, the association insisted that the NYSC should be probed if it fails to commence payment of the new allowance by the end of February, as earlier promised by the Director-General.

Akinbodunse questioned why the payment had not started, despite Brigadier General Yushau’s announcement that corps members would receive ₦77,000 beginning in February 2025.

Her office’s investigation revealed that instead of the promised ₦77,000, corps members only received ₦33,000 for February, which was disbursed last Friday.

She further emphasized that the Federal Government and several state governments have already begun paying their workers the new ₦70,000 minimum wage, leaving no valid reason for the NYSC to withhold the approved allowance for corps members.

Akinbodunse described the continued payment of the old allowance as unfair and unjust, considering the official approval and implementation by the government.

She urged the NYSC to explain the reason behind the delay, stressing that the Federal Government must step in and investigate the situation.

Failure to implement the new allowance, she warned, could demoralize corps members, especially given the current economic challenges in the country.
