Army kills gunmen after recent attack

The Indian Army has announced the killing of two gunmen in Kashmir near the disputed border with Pakistan, just a day after a violent attack claimed the lives of at least 26 individuals in the region.
On Wednesday, the army’s Chinar Corps reported a “heavy exchange of fire” with the assailants, who were allegedly attempting to infiltrate the area in Baramulla.
During the operation, the forces recovered significant quantities of weapons and ammunition.
The Indian army has confirmed, “Two terrorists have been eliminated.”
Since their independence in 1947, the Muslim-majority region of Kashmir has been a point of contention between India and Pakistan, both of which claim the territory in its entirety. Approximately 500,000 Indian soldiers are currently stationed in the region.
For decades, rebel groups have been actively campaigning for either full independence for Kashmir or its integration with Pakistan.
In the wake of a recent attack in the popular tourist destination of Pahalgam, where at least 26 civilians were killed on Tuesday—the deadliest assault on civilians in the area since 2000—security forces are engaged in a widespread manhunt.

Following the Indian government’s revocation of the territory’s partial autonomy in 2019, fighting has generally decreased, as direct control has shifted from New Delhi to the region.
