Nigeria Among Worst Countries for Workers’ Rights – NLC Raises Alarm
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has sounded the alarm over the country’s dismal record on labour rights, following its latest global ranking. According to the NLC, Nigeria has once again been listed among the 10 worst countries in the world for workers’ rights violations—a position it has consistently held in recent years.
The ranking, released by the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), highlights issues such as suppression of union activities, lack of workplace protections, unpaid wages, and the intimidation of labour leaders as key factors contributing to Nigeria’s poor performance.

In a strongly worded statement, the NLC expressed deep concern over the government’s failure to uphold international labour standards and called for urgent reforms to protect Nigerian workers from exploitation and abuse.
“This is a national embarrassment,” the statement read. “The continued neglect of workers’ welfare and disregard for basic rights must end if Nigeria is to regain its dignity and improve productivity.”
Labour leaders are urging the federal government to immediately address wage arrears, enhance collective bargaining rights, and ensure safer working conditions across all sectors.
