9 Spies Nabbed in Shocking Plot to Assassinate Burkina Faso’s Leader

In a dramatic twist that’s sent shockwaves across West Africa, authorities in Burkina Faso have uncovered a high-stakes plot to assassinate the nation’s military ruler, Captain Ibrahim Traoré. Security forces say they’ve arrested nine suspects — including both local citizens and foreign operatives — allegedly involved in the conspiracy to take out the 36-year-old president.

The news broke late Friday after Burkina Faso’s Ministry of Security released a chilling statement revealing the foiled attempt. According to the report, the accused had been under surveillance for weeks, and were caught red-handed with what officials described as “clear evidence” of a well-coordinated plan to eliminate Traoré and destabilize the country.

“This was no random plot. It was a sophisticated operation backed by external interests aimed at sabotaging our sovereignty and silencing our leadership,” the statement read. However, no specific countries or foreign entities were named.

Captain Traoré, who seized power in September 2022 following a coup against former leader Paul-Henri Damiba, has taken a no-nonsense approach toward terrorism, corruption, and what he calls “neo-colonial interference.” His bold pivot away from France and towards stronger ties with Russia and regional allies has earned him fierce loyalty at home — but also made him a target on the geopolitical chessboard.

The alleged assassination attempt has fueled both fear and fury online. Social media platforms, especially X (formerly Twitter), are buzzing with reactions ranging from outrage to suspicion — with some calling for swift justice and others demanding more transparency.

For now, the identities of the suspects remain sealed, and there’s no official date for court proceedings. Meanwhile, security has been ramped up across Ouagadougou as the government moves to tighten its grip and prevent further threats.
