Nigeria Mourns Namibia’s Founding President Sam Nujoma, Hails His Legacy
The Federal Government of Nigeria has extended its condolences to the government and people of Namibia, the Nujoma family and the Southern African region following the passing of Dr. Sam Nujoma at the age of 95.
Nujoma, Namibia’s first president and a pivotal figure in Africa’s liberation struggle, passed away peacefully on Saturday night in the country’s capital, Windhoek. He led Namibia to independence from apartheid South Africa in 1990 and served as president for 15 years.
Namibian President Nangolo Mbumba confirmed his death, stating that Nujoma succumbed to an illness after being hospitalized in Windhoek. However, he did not disclose specific details about his health.
“The foundations of the Republic of Namibia have been shaken,” Mbumba said in a statement.
A statement from Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, signed by Acting Spokesperson Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, described Nujoma as a visionary leader and a true pan-Africanist.
“The departed elder statesman was a visionary leader, a pan-Africanist and a relentless freedom fighter, who dedicated his life to the emancipation of Namibia from colonial rule.
His unwavering commitment to justice, equality, and self-determination not only shaped the destiny of Namibia but also inspired generations of Africans in the fight against oppression and injustice.
As the pioneer President, Dr. Nujoma laid the foundation for a nation built on the principles of democracy, reconciliation, and development.
His leadership set the country on a path of peace and progress, earning him the respect and admiration of the international community.
Nigeria shares in the grief of our Namibian brothers and sisters at this moment of profound loss. We remember Dr. Nujoma as a true friend of Nigeria and a steadfast ally in pursuing African solidarity and cooperation.
