Nigerian Army Urges Troops to Uphold Human Rights and Professionalism in Crisis Zones
The Nigerian Army has called on its personnel to adhere to the laws of armed conflict, prioritize human rights and maintain professionalism to build public trust in conflict-affected areas.
Major General Gold Chibuisi, Chief of Civil-Military Affairs, delivered this charge during a one-day Sensitization Workshop on Human Rights and Professional Conduct for troops of the 16 Brigade in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
Chibuisi highlighted the South-South region’s complex security challenges, including crude oil theft, cultism and kidnapping, which significantly impact local communities and the national economy.

He emphasized the need for soldiers to comply with operational laws and respect engagement rules to address these threats effectively.
Brigadier General Oluremi Obolo, Commander of the 16 Brigade, urged troops to avoid illicit drug use and foster positive civilian relationships.
Dr. Chia Francis, Deputy Commander of Narcotics at the NDLEA Bayelsa Command, cited a 2018 UNODC survey stating that 14 million Nigerians abuse drugs, warning soldiers of its detrimental effects on performance.
Nollywood actor Osita Iheme, a guest presenter, stressed that ongoing awareness about drug abuse would enhance soldiers’ professionalism.
