Nigerian Weather Agency Predicts Nationwide Dust Haze Over Three Days

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a three-day weather forecast predicting a mix of sunshine and dust haze across Nigeria from Monday to Wednesday.

In an update released on Sunday, NiMet stated that the northern region will experience slight dust haze on Monday, with localized visibility ranging between 2 km and 5 km. This hazy condition is expected to persist throughout the forecast period in the region.

For the North-Central region, the forecast indicates sunny skies under a hazy atmosphere over the three days.

In contrast, the southern region will see sunny skies with intermittent cloud patches. Thunderstorms and light rain are expected in parts of Cross River, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom States, particularly during the afternoon and evening hours.

On Tuesday, moderate dust haze is anticipated in the northern region, with visibility potentially dropping below 1,000 meters. The North-Central region will continue to experience slight dust haze, while the southern region is expected to have sunny intervals accompanied by occasional thunderstorms later in the day.

NiMet also predicts light rains in parts of Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom States during this period.

By Wednesday, moderate dust haze with visibility of less than 1,000 meters is forecasted to affect the northern region throughout the day. The North-Central region will likely maintain slight dust haze with localized visibility between 2 km and 5 km. In the southern region, sunny skies with patches of clouds are expected, along with possible thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening hours. Light rains are also anticipated in Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom States.

NiMet has cautioned the public about the presence of suspended dust particles in the air, urging individuals, especially those with respiratory conditions such as asthma, to take necessary precautions.

The agency advised residents to remain vigilant, as strong winds may accompany rainfall in areas prone to thunderstorms.

“Follow safety guidelines provided by relevant authorities. Airline operators are advised to consult NiMet’s weather reports for proper flight planning,” the agency stated.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed by regularly checking NiMet’s official website for updates on weather conditions.
