Nigeria’s military has dropped in the latest global rankings published by Global Firepower (GFP), falling behind regional counterparts such as Egypt, Algeria, and South Africa. The ranking assesses military capabilities worldwide, considering factors like defense budgets, equipment variety, logistical capabilities, and manpower.
This development highlights a significant decline in Nigeria’s military standing, which was previously considered among Africa’s strongest armed forces. In contrast, Egypt retained its dominance in Africa, buoyed by its substantial defense investments, strategic alliances, and advanced military infrastructure. Algeria held its ground with a modernized military and consistent funding, while South Africa leveraged its technological advancements and historical expertise despite financial constraints.
The dip in Nigeria’s ranking has sparked debate about the effectiveness of the nation’s defense sector. Experts attribute this decline to underfunding, delays in modernizing equipment, and the pressures of counter-insurgency operations in the northeastern region. Additionally, issues such as irregular procurement processes, insufficient personnel training, and poor welfare for military members have exacerbated the situation.
In response, the Nigerian government has taken steps to address these challenges. Recent acquisitions, including modern fighter jets, naval vessels, and surveillance systems, signal a renewed focus on enhancing military capacity. However, analysts stress that sustained efforts are required to achieve long-term improvements.
