NiMet forecasts Nationwide thunderstorms, rainfall from Monday to Wednesday

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast widespread thunderstorms and rainfall across the country from has forecast widespread thunderstorms and rainfall across the country from Monday through Wednesday.

In its three-day weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, NiMet predicted morning thunderstorms on Monday in the northern region, particularly affecting Taraba, Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi, Kebbi, Sokoto, Katsina, Jigawa, and Kano. Later in the day, rain and thunderstorms are expected in parts of Taraba, Kaduna, Sokoto, Borno, Kebbi, and Zamfara.

In the North-Central region, morning thunderstorms are anticipated over the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Niger, and Nasarawa. By afternoon and evening, thunderstorms are likely in Plateau, FCT, Nasarawa, Kwara, Niger, Kogi, and Benue.

Southern states are expected to see cloudy skies on Monday morning with chances of rain in Ondo, Ogun, Edo, Ebonyi, Abia, Cross River, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom.

Rain showers are also expected later in the day in Oyo, Ekiti, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Lagos, Edo, Abia, Imo, Ebonyi, Enugu, Anambra, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers, Delta, and Bayelsa.

On Tuesday, morning thunderstorms are forecast in parts of the North including Kano, Zamfara, Katsina, Bauchi, Gombe, Adamawa, Borno, Yobe, and Taraba.

In the afternoon and evening, Taraba, Kebbi, Borno, Gombe, Adamawa, Kaduna, Bauchi, and Katsina will likely experience similar weather.

Thunderstorms with rainfall are expected in the morning over the FCT, Niger, and Nasarawa in the North-Central region, extending to Kogi, Kwara, Plateau, and other parts later in the day.

In the South, thunderstorms are likely Tuesday morning in Ondo, Ogun, Edo, Ebonyi, Abia, Cross River, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom. Rainfall is also expected later in the day in Oyo, Ekiti, Osun, Ogun, Lagos, Edo, Anambra, Abia, Enugu, Imo, Ebonyi, Cross River, Rivers, Delta, and Bayelsa.

Wednesday’s forecast includes morning thunderstorms in parts of the North such as Zamfara, Adamawa, Kaduna, Sokoto, Kebbi, and Taraba.

Afternoon and evening rains are also expected across Taraba, Kaduna, Katsina, Bauchi, Zamfara, Sokoto, and Adamawa.

In the North-Central region, the FCT, Nasarawa, Niger, and Benue are expected to experience morning thunderstorms with further activity in Nasarawa, Plateau, FCT, Kwara, Kogi, and Niger later in the day.

Southern areas such as Ogun, Ondo, Oyo, Edo, Enugu, Ebonyi, Cross River, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom are expected to have morning showers, with rain predicted across the entire southern region by afternoon or evening.

NiMet further warned that strong winds may precede thunderstorms in some areas and urged the public to take safety precautions which includes; securing loose objects outdoors, avoiding driving in heavy rain, disconnecting electrical appliances during storms and steering clear of tall trees to avoid falling branches.

Airline operators are also advised to obtain detailed weather reports from NiMet for efficient flight planning.
