NMA FCT Threatens Indefinite Strike Over Unjust Doctor Suspensions
The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Chapter, has issued a 14-day ultimatum over the suspension of three doctors, warning of a total and indefinite strike if they are not reinstated.
In a memo dated June 13, 2025, and addressed to the Chief Medical Director of the National Hospital, Prof. Muhammad Mahmud, the NMA FCT described the doctors’ disengagement as unjust, illegal, and a violation of their rights.

Signed by the NMA FCT Chairman, Dr. Ayogu Emeka, and Assistant Secretary, Dr. Usman Hafiz, the memo was titled: “Notice of 14 Days Strike Ultimatum for Vehemently Refusing to Reinstate Our Disengaged Members.”
The association accused the FCT Primary Healthcare Board of casualizing the affected doctors — Dr. Arome, Dr. Tijjani, and Dr. Salisu — as locum consultants for three years before abruptly suspending them without cause.
NMA FCT described the action as a “kangaroo suspension” and demanded an immediate and unconditional reinstatement, citing violations of the Public Service Rules and the National Health Act of 2014.
According to the memo, if the doctors are not reinstated by June 30, 2025, all NMA members at the hospital will begin a total strike. If there is no resolution within seven days of the strike, the action will be expanded to include all NMA members across the FCT.
The decision was reached at the association’s Ordinary General Meeting held on June 11, 2025, in Abuja. The NMA also called on the FCT Minister and the Minister of Health to intervene.
The looming strike has sparked concerns about a potential disruption of healthcare services in the FCT, with the NMA urging authorities to act swiftly to avoid a full-scale shutdown.
