Court Orders Restitution Before Accessing Fine

A Magistrates’ Court sitting in Isabo district of Abeokuta the Ogun state capital , has sentenced a woman, identified as Falilatu Amidu, and her daughter, Ayisatu Amidu, to six months in prison for stealing dried ponmo (cow skin), stockfish, and dried meat worth N1 million.

It was gathered that the court found the duo guilty of conspiracy and theft, following evidence presented by the prosecution.

The presiding judge Magistrate O. Odumosu ruled that the prosecution had proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt.

She sentenced both women to six months in jail but gave them the option of a N5,000 fine each. However, the convicts must first repay N100,000 each to the complainant before they can access the fine option.

Prosecutor Inspector Kehinde Fawunmi explained that the crime occurred in August 2024 at Lafenwa Market. Falilatu, who usually assisted the complainant, Mrs. Kafayat Alao, in transporting goods from her store, was entrusted with fetching some items.

However, after waiting for over an hour, Alao went to check on her and discovered that Falilatu—and a large bag containing stockfish, dried ponmo, and meat had vanished.

Investigations revealed that Falilatu stole the goods and passed them on to her daughter, Ayisatu, to sell, fully aware that they were stolen. The court found their actions in violation of Sections 516, 390(9), and 127 of the Ogun State Criminal Code Laws of 2006.
