NSCDC Arrests 17 for Illegal Mining in Kogi State

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has apprehended 17 individuals and confiscated several vehicles in a major crackdown on illegal mining in Kogi State.

The operation, spearheaded by the NSCDC’s Mining Marshals, was conducted in the Odiagbo-Okaba area of Ankpa Local Government Area.

According to a statement released on Wednesday by NSCDC spokesperson Afolabi Babawale, the team impounded three trucks and 39 motorcycles allegedly used in illegal mining activities.

The enforcement followed growing concerns from local residents about environmental damage and public health risks associated with unregulated mining in the region.

The Mining Marshals initiative—an inter-agency collaboration between the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development and the Ministry of Interior—was launched to enforce mining regulations, dismantle illegal operations, and safeguard Nigeria’s mineral resources.

Assistant Commandant of Corps, John Attah, led the recent operation. NSCDC Commandant General, Ahmed Audi, reiterated the agency’s commitment to combating illegal mining, describing it as a form of economic sabotage.

“The recent crackdown led by Assistant Commandant John Attah resulted in the arrest of 17 suspects,” the statement said. “Three trucks and 39 motorcycles used in the illicit trade were seized. This action follows a series of complaints from residents regarding environmental degradation and health hazards caused by illegal mining.”

Audi emphasized the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps ongoing resolve to protect national assets and pursue individuals and groups involved in illegal exploitation of the country’s mineral wealth.
