Nurse Alleges Police Officer Paid for False Testimony in Rape Case, Claims Threats to Life
A nurse, Chiemela Nonye, has accused Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Nkiruka Ugwu, attached to Area ‘M’ Command, Idimu, Lagos, of paying her to provide false testimony in a rape case involving three minors. Nonye also claims the officer has been threatening her life to prevent her from revealing her involvement in the case under investigation at the Area ‘D’ Command, Mushin.
When contacted, CSP Ugwu denied the allegations and issued a warning: “I told her (Nonye) never to involve my name. She can’t try it. Why would she involve my name? Am I fighting her with Amuche? She should go ahead and do whatever she wants to do. If it is my case she wants, I am ready for her. She cannot try to mention my name.”
Nonye was arrested on January 22, 2025, following a petition by one Mr. Ekwenyu Uchenna, who alleged that she falsely claimed to have witnessed him raping three teenage siblings in April 2024. According to the petition, Uchenna was arrested and detained for seven days at the Alausa Police Division before being transferred to the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) in Abuja, where he spent three more weeks in detention.
Uchenna stated that upon investigation by detectives at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba, Lagos, no evidence was found to support the allegations, leading to his release. He alleged that the minors’ mother was also arrested on suspicion of colluding with him.
During interrogation at Area D Command, Nonye reportedly admitted in a written statement to fabricating her claims against Uchenna and the minors’ mother, stating she was paid an undisclosed amount by CSP Ugwu.

In a recorded telephone conversation, Nonye apologized to the mother of the minors, saying: “I don’t know why I agreed to this. As I speak with you, I’m in tears. Please forgive me. I didn’t know why I agreed to frame Uchenna. Please help me apologize to Uche.” The mother responded, blaming CSP Ugwu for coercing Nonye and assuring her of legal support.
The mother of the minors also alleged that CSP Ugwu had repeatedly threatened her life and destroyed her business. She said: “CSP Ugwu came to my shop located at Cele-Egbe last year and seized my goods. She told the touts in the area to kill me if I tried to go near the shop. She said she was the Divisional Police Officer, DPO. Since then, all my goods have been taken.”
