Nurse banned for paying patient $3,000 to cut off ex-boyfriend’s penis, tongue

Karenjeet Kaur Warburton, an Australian nurse, has been banned from practicing for four years after paying a patient $3,000 to mutilate her ex-boyfriend, senior Queensland Police Inspector Don McKay.

Warburton, who dated McKay between March 2020 and early 2021, was found to have orchestrated a violent plot in 2021, offering a patient, Andrew Bown, money to carry out a brutal attack. Between April and October 2021, she gave Bown photographs of McKay and details about his residence, instructing him to cut off McKay’s penis and tongue, burn his face with acid, and sever his spine or break his bones to leave him permanently disabled.

The case was reviewed by the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal, which published its decision last week, months after it was initially handed down in March. Tribunal member Julie Dick stated that Warburton had paid and promised further payment for the attack and only ceased her efforts upon being arrested.

Warburton pleaded guilty to charges of attempting to procure grievous bodily harm and attempting to procure a malicious act with intent. She was sentenced to five years in prison, with parole eligibility after serving 16 months.

In the health tribunal hearing, Warburton did not contest allegations of professional misconduct.

The tribunal ruled to disqualify her from practicing for four years, inclusive of time already served. Ms. Dick acknowledged that Warburton faces significant challenges in resuming her nursing career, including reapplying for registration and meeting updated practice requirements.

Meanwhile, Bown, who conspired with Warburton, was convicted in November 2022 by the Cairns District Court for arson, attempted procurement of grievous bodily harm, and possession of a dangerous item.

He received a three-and-a-half-year prison sentence for his role in the plot.
