NYSC Urges Employers to Support Corps Members with Transport, Accommodation

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has appealed to corps employers to support corps members by either picking them up from orientation camps or reimbursing their transportation costs when such arrangements are not made.
This appeal was made by NYSC Director General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, during the 2025 NYSC/Corps Employers’ Workshop held in Bauchi on Thursday. Represented by Agatha Banki, Director of the Northeast Area Office 1, Nafiu also called on employers to provide decent accommodation or pay allowances in lieu, stressing that such gestures would enhance service delivery by corps members.
He described the workshop as a strategic annual event that fosters engagement between the NYSC and corps employers, providing a platform for addressing challenges and exchanging ideas to improve collaboration.
“These workshops have always generated valuable insights and practical recommendations that influence the Scheme’s operations,” the DG said. “I am confident this year’s edition will continue that tradition.”
Nafiu outlined key responsibilities of corps employers, including provision of accommodation, transport allowances, healthcare access similar to what is offered to regular staff, and a conducive work environment.
He urged participants to devise sustainable strategies for strengthening ties between the NYSC and employers, improve communication, and address persistent issues in corps administration.
“You must actively contribute ideas that will help shape the nation-building mandate of the Scheme,” Nafiu added.
Also speaking at the event, NYSC Bauchi State Coordinator, Umoren Kufre, emphasised the importance of mutual cooperation for the success of the scheme.
“The NYSC remains committed to growth and development through partnerships with corps employers. Such collaborations are crucial for empowerment, innovation, and fulfilling our social responsibilities,” Kufre said.
He noted that the workshop would feature robust discussions, shared experiences, and exploration of best practices aimed at strengthening partnerships and boosting the NYSC’s relevance in the labour market.
