Ogun Warns Residents, Contractors Against Damaging Water Infrastructure

The Ogun State Government has issued a strong warning to residents and contractors against damaging water infrastructure, vowing to arrest and prosecute offenders.

In a statement, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Water Resources, Damilola Otubanjo, condemned the destruction of vital water facilities. She accused some contractors of damaging underground pipes during road construction without making any effort to repair them.

Otubanjo noted that the Ogun State Water Corporation (OSWC) was already struggling with old and deteriorating infrastructure, which had not been replaced by past administrations. Despite ongoing efforts to rehabilitate and upgrade the water supply system, these efforts were being undermined by repeated damage to the pipelines.

She explained that such reckless activities were causing massive water losses, increasing operational costs, and reducing service efficiency. She also highlighted the risks of contamination, service disruptions, and financial losses resulting from damaged pipelines.

“As we are fully committed to rehabilitating and upgrading our water supply network, one pipe at a time, our efforts to enhance the water sector and ensure the provision of potable water to the residents of Ogun State are being hampered by the insensitive activities of road contractors,” she stated.

Otubanjo stressed that the government would no longer tolerate such damages and would enforce stricter regulations. She announced plans for better collaboration between the Water Corporation and road construction firms to assess water pipelines before any project begins.

Additionally, she revealed that the state would strengthen monitoring systems, improve response mechanisms for repairs, and raise public awareness to prevent further damage. The government urged all stakeholders to support efforts to ensure a sustainable and efficient water supply in Ogun State.
