Opay Awards ₦6 Million in Scholarships to 20 Students at Rev. Fr. Adasu University

In a remarkable show of corporate social responsibility, Opay Digital Services has awarded scholarships to 20 indigent students of Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi formally known as Benue State University, offering hope and financial relief to young scholars pursuing their academic goals.

The scholarships, each valued at ₦300,000 annually, will run for 10 years, totaling a significant investment in education. The announcement was made on Friday, May 30, 2025, by Dr. Vandefan James, Head of Security at Opay, during a formal event held at the university’s Vice-Chancellor’s Conference Room.

Dr. Vandefan emphasized Opay’s nationwide presence in 27 states, noting that the fintech company is insured by the Nigerian Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) and regulated by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). He urged the beneficiaries to stay dedicated, adding that the scholarship funds are strictly for academic purposes.

A key highlight of the event was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Opay and the university. This milestone was praised by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Tor Joe Iorapuu, who described it as a transformative partnership.

“This is more than a ceremonial signing. It is a celebration of shared vision and purpose — a testament to what is possible when corporate responsibility aligns with academic aspiration.”

Professor Iorapuu lauded Opay’s commitment to education and its decision to invest in the lives of Nigerian youth, calling the initiative a “bold step” toward educational inclusivity.

He also reiterated three strategic requests previously made to Opay: support for a Centre for Chinese Studies, AI and emerging tech training and branded campus shuttle buses to improve student mobility.

“Our appeal to Opay is not just for support, but for a long-term collaboration that prepares our students for global relevance.”

Beyond the scholarship initiative, the partnership promises expanded collaboration in digital literacy, cultural exchange, transportation and research innovation.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks by the Student Union Government President, Oyi Samuel Alechenu, who assured Opay of the students’ loyalty and patronage. On behalf of the university, he presented a souvenir to the visiting Opay delegation.
