Osimhen: “I Apologised to My Teammates After the Missed Chance”

Super Eagles forward Victor Osimhen has opened up about the late missed opportunity during Nigeria’s 4-1 extra-time victory over Gabon on Thursday, a win that secured the team’s place in Sunday’s playoff final against DR Congo.

Osimhen, who plays for Galatasaray, missed a clear scoring chance near the end of regulation time — a moment that could have sealed the match without extra time. Despite the setback, he stayed composed and focused on making things right.

Speaking after the match, Osimhen reflected on the moment.

“I am a striker, sometimes I score the goal no one believes, and sometimes I lose the ones people think I am going to score,” he said.

He added, “I have the mentality that it does not matter what kind of opportunities I lose, so long the game is still on, I will try to correct it.”

Osimhen revealed that he apologised to his teammates moments after the miss.

“Just like I told my teammates, I told them I am sorry and I told them I am going to correct it in the extra time and I am happy I did it.”

True to his word, Osimhen scored twice in extra time, powering Nigeria to a dominant victory. Sevilla duo Akor Adams and Chidera Ejuke provided the other goals as the Super Eagles overwhelmed Gabon.

The win sends Nigeria into Sunday’s final against DR Congo, keeping hopes of reaching the 2026 World Cup alive.
