Osun Court Sentences Two Friends to Seven Years for Blinding Man in Brutal Attack
Justice Kudirat Akano of the Osun State High Court in Ede has sentenced two friends, Oluwashina Adenle Wakeel and Yusuf Adewale, to seven years in prison for assaulting Abdul Salam Jubril Oyewale and causing him to lose his right eye.
The duo was arraigned in March 2023 on a seven-count charge, including conspiracy, attempted murder and assault occasioning harm, under various sections of the Criminal Code. According to a certified true copy of the judgment obtained by Journalists the attack took place in September 2022.
Oyewale testified that while riding a motorcycle with Usman Abdulbasit along Ibode Poly Road in Ede at around 11:00 a.m., a black Toyota Corolla overtook and blocked their path. Yusuf Adewale allegedly got out of the vehicle, seized the motorcycle key and along with Wakeel and others, attacked him. During the assault, a stick was inserted into his right eye, causing severe injuries and heavy bleeding.
The victim sought treatment at multiple hospitals, including Minaret Hospital in Osogbo, University College Hospital in Ibadan, and Eye Foundation Hospital in Lagos. However, he was informed that the damage to his retina was irreversible, leaving him permanently blind in his right eye. He continues to seek treatment to preserve vision in his remaining eye.

During the trial, the prosecution, led by Solicitor General and Permanent Secretary of the state, Morufat Bello, along with Chief State Counsel Adekunle Adeniyi, presented four witnesses and tendered nine exhibits.
Justice Akano ruled that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt. Defense counsel Ayodele Laogun pleaded for leniency, stating that the convicts were first-time offenders with dependents.
The judge sentenced them to seven years imprisonment for conspiracy, three years for assault occasioning harm, one year for assault, and one month for breach of peace. The sentences will run concurrently.
