Over 300 Lawmakers, Activists, Others From 27 Countries Demand Release Of Detained #EndBadGovernance Protesters In Nigeria

The government with the help of security operatives later arrested hundreds of these protesters and charged some of them with treason.

Over 300 people, who are members of parliament, city councillors, trade unionists, activists and academics from 27 countries have demanded the immediate release of #EndBadGovernance protesters being detained in Nigeria.

From August 1-10, Nigerians held massive protests across the country to demand an end to bad governance.

The government with the help of security operatives later arrested hundreds of these protesters and charged some of them with treason.

Some of them have been granted bail but a large of number them are still being detained because of the stringent conditions.

For instance, earlier this month, the Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Emeka Nwite, set strict bail conditions for 10 protesters.

Each must provide N10 million and a surety with Abuja-based property within the court’s jurisdiction, according to the court.

This court pronouncement received a backlash from concerned citizens and groups who viewed it as a violation of their rights.

A document made available to SaharaReporters on Wednesday contained the list of at least 300 lawmakers and activists from countries across the world lending their voices to the call on the Nigerian government to release these protesters.

Internationalist Standpoint, an international socialist revolutionary organisation, initiated a petition against repression in Nigeria. Nigeria government cracked down on activists, trade unionists and socialists during and after the #EndBadGovernance protests from 1st to 10th of August, 2024.

Internationalist Standpoint has announced that more than 300 MP’s, councilors, trade unionists and activists from 27 countries signed the petition to demand immediate and unconditional release of all those detained.
