PCN shuts 486 drug outlets in Niger

The Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN) has sealed 486 pharmaceutical premises in Niger State over various regulatory violations.
Head of Enforcement, PCN Headquarters, Dr. Suleiman Ciroma, disclosed this on Friday during a press briefing at the council’s North Central Zonal Office in Minna after a statewide inspection exercise.
According to him, the affected premises included 69 pharmacies, 127 patent medicine shops, and 290 unlicensed outlets. One person was also arrested for allegedly obstructing PCN inspectors and will face prosecution.
Ciroma explained that the council inspected 672 premises—136 pharmacies and 536 patent medicine shops—across nine local government areas: Agaie, Bida, Tafa, Chanchaga, Lapai, Paikoro, Bosso, Suleja, and Gurara.
He said the operation targeted compliance with professional ethics, personnel requirements, premises standards, and pharmaceutical practice to guarantee safe and quality healthcare delivery.
The inspection uncovered illegal operations of unlicensed outlets, unauthorised clinical practices, non-compliance with regulatory standards, sale of controlled drugs, and unapproved training of apprentices.
Ciroma urged Nigerians to patronise only licensed pharmaceutical premises, identifiable by the display of valid licences, and commended residents of Niger State for their cooperation.

He added that the ongoing nationwide enforcement would help curb the circulation of substandard and falsified medicines.
