PDP Crisis: August Convention Is the only way Out

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is grappling with internal turmoil, unable to act against FCT Minister Nyesom Wike due to fears of retaliation. Party insiders say Wike’s control over Abuja puts them in a difficult position. “If we expel Wike, we may lose access to our offices or have our property revoked. That’s why we’re stuck,” one source told FCNN.

Two governors have already defected, and more may follow. However, PDP leaders are banking on the upcoming August national convention in Kano to reset the party. A NEC meeting is set for June 30 to prepare. “Once we elect new leaders, the crisis will ease. The convention is our only way out,” a party official said.

The situation reflects a broader crisis across opposition parties. The Labour Party remains divided despite a Supreme Court ruling that voided Julius Abure’s leadership. INEC has yet to reflect this change, keeping Abure’s name on its site even after his tenure reportedly ended in March.

Similarly, the NNPP is splintered into three factions. Though INEC lists Ajuji Ahmed (aligned with Rabiu Kwankwaso) as chairman, rival factions led by Agbo Major and party founder Boniface Aniebonam also claim legitimacy. A recent FCT High Court ruling dismissed Ahmed’s suit, which the Aniebonam camp sees as a win, though no definitive judgment on leadership was made.

Amid the chaos, opposition parties accuse INEC of enabling confusion and weakening them, allegedly to the ruling party’s advantage.
