The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a suspected quack ophthalmologist, Gabriel Gideon, in Nsit-Ubium Local Government Area for allegedly administering unapproved substances to hundreds of residents.
Police spokesperson DSP Timfon John, in a statement on Friday, said Gideon was arrested on Thursday, August 14, 2025, following a tip-off from concerned residents of Itu LGA, where he reportedly treated people with a mixture of olive oil, fruit juice, and water.
“The suspect, who paraded himself as an ophthalmologist, was caught administering unapproved substances to residents of Ikot Akpan Itam, Ikot Abasi Itam, and Nung Ikot Itam in Itu LGA,” the statement read.
According to the police, Gideon admitted he was not a qualified eye doctor but had gathered over 300 people in each of the affected villages, charging them N500 each for the so-called treatment.
A medical team from the state Ministry of Health confirmed that the substances used were unsafe and not approved for medical use.
