Police Arrest Six Over Killing at Abuja Market

At least six suspects have been arrested in connection with a fatal incident that sparked unrest at Gosa Market, located along Airport Road in Abuja.

Operatives of the Federal Capital Territory Police Command confirmed the arrests, following the killing of a man accused of stealing tubers of yam.

The incident, which triggered panic among traders and residents, led to the temporary abandonment of the market — widely known for offering some of the most affordable food items in the city.

Addressing journalists in Abuja, the FCT Commissioner of Police, Adewale Ajao, stated that police officers quickly intervened to prevent further escalation and restore calm.

“A young man was accused of stealing some tubers of yam at the market. Sadly, someone decided to take the law into his own hands and ended a human life. That’s what triggered the crisis,” Ajao said.

He confirmed that six suspects are currently in police custody and that the case is being treated as murder.

The police chief also revealed that traditional leaders and community representatives were involved in peace talks immediately after the incident.

“We engaged the community leader and the area’s traditional ruler. Discussions were held to understand what went wrong, and both parties recognized the need to maintain peace,” he said.

As of Thursday, Gosa Market had fully resumed operations under heightened police surveillance.

In a broader crackdown on crime, Ajao reported that five armed robbery cases led to the arrest of 17 suspects, while six others were apprehended in connection with foiled robberies in the Apo and Kubwa areas.

Recovered items included four vehicles, a jackknife, military camouflage gear, and pistol ammunition.
