Kogi University Lecturer Dies in Hotel Room During Alleged Sexual Encounter With 200-Level Student: Police Launch Investigation, Conduct Autopsy

A senior lecturer at Kogi State University (KSU) has reportedly died during a suspected sexual encounter with a 200-level female student in a hotel room in Anyigba, sparking widespread outrage and raising serious concerns over student-teacher relationships within the academic institution.

The incident, which occurred late on Monday night, has thrown the university community into mourning and shock. According to sources familiar with the matter, the unnamed lecturer, who was said to be in his late 50s, had checked into a popular hotel in the town with the student, allegedly under the pretense of a private meeting. However, things took a tragic turn when he suddenly slumped during the act and could not be revived.

Hotel staff who were alerted by the panicked student reportedly called for help immediately. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but was confirmed dead on arrival. The student, whose identity has been withheld for legal and security reasons, is said to be cooperating with investigators.

The Kogi State Police Command confirmed the incident and stated that a full investigation had been launched. Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP William Ovye Aya, revealed that an autopsy is being conducted to determine the exact cause of death.

“We have launched a full-scale investigation into the unfortunate incident involving a lecturer of Kogi State University. An autopsy is currently underway to determine the cause of death. The young woman involved has not been arrested at this time but is assisting the police with useful information,” the police spokesman stated.

Sources within the university hinted that the lecturer was known for allegedly having inappropriate relationships with female students, though no formal disciplinary action had been taken against him prior to the incident. The incident has reignited debates around the issue of sexual misconduct in Nigerian universities, with advocacy groups calling for stronger institutional policies to protect students from exploitation.

The management of Kogi State University has yet to issue an official statement but internal sources confirm that a meeting of the school’s disciplinary and ethics board has been scheduled.

Meanwhile, concerned parents and stakeholders in the education sector have urged the state government and university authorities to carry out a thorough investigation and ensure justice is served, regardless of the outcome of the autopsy.

This is a developing story. Further details will be provided as the investigation unfolds.
