Lala Akindoju reflects on welcoming a child and losing her father weeks apart

Actress and producer Lala Akindoju has shared an emotional reflection on experiencing both the joy of motherhood and the pain of loss within weeks of each other.

In 2024, Akindoju welcomed her second child, only to lose her beloved father shortly after — a period she described as a “bittersweet season” that tested her strength and faith.

Marking her son Adéìyèolú’s first birthday, the filmmaker took to Instagram to express gratitude to her loved ones, friends, and colleagues for their unwavering support during that difficult time. She paid special tribute to her husband, chef OritseGbubemi Fregene, for being her “rock.”

“Having a child and losing my daddy weeks apart was not something I ever hoped for or was prepared for,” she wrote. “But motherhood is such a divine and selfless calling — no matter what life throws at you, you must show up because another human depends on you completely.”

Reflecting on her first year of motherhood, she acknowledged the challenges of balancing work, grief, breastfeeding, travel, and raising her older child. “It has truly taken a village,” she said, appreciating everyone who helped her through the journey — from friends who kept her company to colleagues who stepped in so she could rest or work.

She continued, “Our celebration is sweeter because we have you all. We are grateful for the gift of Adéìyèolú Monoyooritse Chioke Ayanfe — for his belly laughs, his pout, his love for food, and for the privilege of being his parents. He has expanded our hearts and deepened our joy.”
