Police begin Investigations as Anambra Security Personnel kills woman

An unidentified member of Anambra State’s security agency, ‘Agunechemba,’ is alleged to have fatally shot a woman while attempting to clear a path for the agency’s convoy.

The tragic incident took place late Tuesday along the busy Ibeto Junction in Nnewi, located in the Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

This incident marks the second fatality attributed to Agunechemba operatives in a short period, as they were previously involved in the shooting of another woman at a market in Mgbakwu community, Awka North Local Government Area, in March.

Witnesses reported that motorists were caught in a traffic jam at Ibeto Junction when the Agunechemba convoy arrived.

To facilitate their passage, the operatives allegedly fired several shots into the air.

An eye-witness recounted, “In their effort to clear the roadway for their patrol vehicles, the operatives began shooting. Unfortunately, a motorist named Chiamaka was struck by a stray bullet and collapsed immediately.”

The shooting triggered chaos in the area, prompting people to flee to safety while the Agunechemba operatives left the scene. The victim was quickly transported to a nearby hospital, where she was later pronounced dead due to the severe gunshot wound.

Anambra State Police Command spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident in a statement released on Wednesday and stated that an investigation “The Commissioner of Police Anambra State Police Command, CP Ikioye Orutugu, sues for calm and states that the Command is already in contact with the relevant security outfit to identify the suspect and ensure justice is served.
