Police Rearrest Escaped Suspected Kidnapper of Anambra Lawmaker

The Anambra State Police Command has successfully rearrested Ikemefuna Ossai, a suspect implicated in the kidnapping and subsequent murder of the late Justice Azuka, who represented Onitsha North 1 Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly.
Ossai was initially apprehended on February 6, 2025, the same day the lawmaker’s lifeless body was discovered near the Second Niger Bridge.
However, on February 18, Ossai managed to escape custody in Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area, during an operation aimed at apprehending another suspect linked to the crime. Chinedu Okoli, another suspect, also escaped during this incident.
The escape was attributed to operational lapses, and an internal investigation was launched to address the breach .
Following a meticulous and intelligence-driven operation, Ossai was rearrested on May 7, 2025, in Asaba, Delta State. Upon sighting the arresting officers, Ossai attempted to flee but was swiftly subdued.
During the apprehension, he sustained a gunshot wound to the leg.
The Anambra State Police Command has briefed relevant stakeholders, including the family of the late lawmaker and the leadership of the Anambra State House of Assembly, on the development.
The Commissioner of Police expressed regret over the operational lapses that led to the suspect’s earlier escape.
Intelligence gathered from the suspect is currently aiding ongoing operations.
The Command has intensified efforts to apprehend the remaining fugitive and dismantle the criminal network responsible for this heinous crime.
