Police suspend enforcement of tinted glass permit after court order

The Nigeria Police Force has temporarily halted the enforcement of the tinted glass permit following the receipt of a court order directing a suspension of the exercise.

Spokesperson for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command, Josephine Adeh, confirmed the development during an interview on national television.

“Information reaching me from the office of the PRO is that the order has been received, and the enforcement of the tinted glass permit is now on hold pending the court’s verdict,” Adeh stated. “We are waiting for the court’s decision. We are not against the judiciary and will abide by its ruling.”

She explained that the policy was introduced for security reasons, noting that some criminals have used vehicles with tinted windows to conceal their identities while committing crimes.

“The law was not made by us; we only enforce it. The policy was purely security-driven because some offenders used tinted vehicles to evade identification,” she said.

Adeh also refuted claims that the enforcement was a revenue-generating scheme, clarifying that payments directed to Parkway Projects’ private account were part of an administrative arrangement, not a police initiative.

The police action had sparked widespread criticism, as many Nigerians questioned the re-enforcement of the 1992 Decree—later codified as an Act in 2004—which mandates vehicle owners with tinted glass to pay ₦14,200 annually for a permit.

Thousands of motorists have reportedly complied with the regulation, while others had their vehicles impounded for non-compliance.

However, a High Court in Delta State recently issued an ex-parte order restraining the police from enforcing the regulation, prompting the temporary suspension of the exercise.

The police initially stated they were unaware of the court’s directive until the recent clarification.
