Plateau State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cletus Bako Shurkuk, has taken decisive steps to enhance healthcare delivery in the state through a symbolic visit to two key institutions in Jos. These visits underscore his commitment to strengthening health infrastructure and fostering strategic partnerships to address critical health challenges.

The Commissioner began his tour on January 3, 2025, at the Malaria Consortium office located along Mission Road, off Yakubu Gowon Way. During the visit, he inspected a vacant office space previously occupied by Breakthrough Action Nigeria, a non-governmental organization that recently concluded its health communication project in Plateau State.

Dr. Shurkuk emphasized the importance of repurposing the facility to sustain the progress achieved by the organization. “This facility must not remain idle,” he stated. “We are exploring ways to utilize it for malaria prevention and public health campaigns, ensuring that the advancements made by Breakthrough Action Nigeria are not only preserved but also expanded.” This visit marked a critical step in optimizing existing infrastructure to support the state’s health priorities.

Later that day, the Commissioner proceeded to the Carter Center in Jos, where he paid a condolence visit following the passing of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter. The late President, widely celebrated for his humanitarian contributions and dedication to global health, left an enduring legacy through his efforts to combat diseases such as guinea worm.

Addressing the staff of the Carter Center, Dr. Shurkuk remarked, “Today, we join the global community in mourning the loss of President Jimmy Carter, a true champion of health and humanitarianism. His tireless work to eradicate diseases and improve lives around the world serves as an inspiration to us all. We pray for God’s comfort for the Carter family during this challenging time.”

The Commissioner also reaffirmed Plateau State’s commitment to maintaining its collaboration with the Carter Center, particularly in tackling neglected tropical diseases. He highlighted the importance of building on President Carter’s legacy to ensure continued progress in global and local health initiatives.

Dr. Shurkuk’s visits demonstrate proactive leadership and a clear vision for leveraging partnerships and resources to address pressing health issues in Plateau State. By focusing on sustainability and collaboration, he aims to ensure that every opportunity to advance the state’s healthcare system is fully utilized.
