President Bola Tinubu cancels official events in Lagos, to honour the victims of the Abuja and Anambra stampedes.

The tragedies occurred on Saturday morning, claiming multiple lives and injuring many others

Tinubu was scheduled to attend the Boat Regatta from his residence in Ikoyi, but cancelled his appearance after receiving briefings on the stampedes. Dignitaries, including Lagos State officials and white cap chiefs, were already seated when the President cancelled his attendance.

Tinubu’s Response

Tinubu commiserated with the victims families, urging states and authorities to enforce strict crowd control measures. He noted the disturbing resemblance to the recent Ibadan stampede, which claimed 35 children’s lives. Tinubu emphasized that local and state authorities should no longer tolerate operational lapses by organisations involved in charitable activities

The President prayed for the peaceful repose of the deceased and a quick recovery for the injured. He reiterated that such mishaps are avoidable with proper event planning and safety protocols. Tinubu also wished the Lagos State government and Boat Regatta organisers a successful and hitch-free festival.
