Prison Break: 12 Inmates Escape from Kogi Prison

A significant prison break occurred early Monday morning at the Federal Correctional Centre in Kotonkarfe, the administrative center of Kogi Local Government Area in Kogi State.
Although the exact number of escapees has not been officially confirmed, government sources estimate that at least 12 inmates managed to flee.
In contrast to previous incidents where armed assailants facilitated inmate escapes, this instance appears to have been executed without external interference, with reports indicating that the inmates escaped through the prison tower.
While officials from the facility have refrained from commenting on the incident, the Kogi State government has verified the occurrence and is calling for a federal investigation into the matter.
Mr. Kingsley Fanwo, the State Commissioner for Information and Communication, issued a statement asserting that the state will collaborate with security agencies to uncover the circumstances surrounding the escape and to pursue the apprehension of the fugitives.

Fanwo labeled the situation as “unfortunate,” assuring the public that the government is implementing immediate measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
He emphasized the troubling nature of the escape, noting the implications of inmates breaching security without causing any structural damage, which warrants a comprehensive investigation to identify the precise factors that facilitated their flight and to pinpoint any potential internal conspirators.
In response to the incident, Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has instructed the State Security Adviser to partner with the Federal Correctional Centre and other security entities to avert such breaches moving forward.
The state government has reaffirmed its dedication to bolstering federal security efforts by providing logistical support and necessary resources to enhance operational efficacy.
Fanwo praised the prompt action taken by security personnel and urged community members to remain watchful.
He called upon residents to report any suspicious individuals, stressing that anyone found harboring an escaped inmate will face legal consequences.
As investigations continue, the government reassured residents that the situation is under control, encouraging them to carry on with their daily routines without fear. Fanwo emphasized that ensuring the safety of citizens and their property remains the government’s utmost priority.
