Prophet Godwin Ikuru Declares For 2027 Lagos Governorship Bid, Says Non-Yoruba Leadership Needed

Kindly share this story

Prophet Godwin Ikuru, the General Overseer of Jehovah Eye Salvation Ministry and a chieftain of the APC, has announced his intention to contest for the Lagos State governorship in 2027.

His declaration has stirred debate after he stated that the time has come for a non-Yoruba candidate to govern Lagos State.

According to Ikuru, Lagos is a cosmopolitan city that belongs to all Nigerians, and its leadership should reflect the diverse population that lives and works there.

He also disclosed that during the 2023 elections he supported President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. When Tinubu reportedly asked him about his own political ambition, Ikuru said he told him clearly that he hoped to become the next governor of Lagos.

Speaking on his plans, the cleric said his administration would focus on expanding infrastructure, building more roads and hospitals, and complementing the development efforts of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. He also promised to address issues such as the demolition of houses and restoring order on the streets of Lagos.

Ikuru added that he has begun consultations with different political blocs as preparations for the APC governorship primaries ahead of the 2027 elections.

His announcement has now raised a broader political question: Should Lagos produce a non-Yoruba governor, or should the state continue with the traditional political pattern that has existed since 1999?

With Lagos widely regarded as Nigeria’s most cosmopolitan state, the debate over its future leadership is already gaining attention.
