NPA, Lagos Government Launch Port Corridor Clean-Up to Tackle Crime and Congestion

In a determined effort to decongest Lagos port corridors and enhance security, the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), in collaboration with the Lagos State Government and security agencies, has commenced a three-day full-scale clean-up and sensitisation exercise.

Tagged “NPA Security Clearance Operations 2025,” the operation targets the removal of miscreants, hoodlums, shanties, and illegal structures along major port corridors, including Tin Can Island Complex, Lagos Port Complex, Kirikiri Lighter Terminals I & II and adjoining areas.

The initiative aims to eliminate obstructions that hinder port operations and pose risks to personnel, cargo and vessels. It also aligns with the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), which promotes safety at global ports.

Flagging off the exercise, NPA Managing Director, Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, emphasized the importance of the operation:

“The ports’ access roads and environs are international corridors and gateways to the national economy. We have a duty to collaborate as necessary to ensure sanity is maintained.”

He stressed the significance of the clean-up in driving economic growth by minimizing delays and enhancing trade facilitation.

Represented by the NPA’s General Manager of Security, Mr. Anthony Edosomwan, Dantsoho explained that the authority had earlier embarked on a public awareness campaign to educate stakeholders on the clean-up’s importance:

“This is a crucial step in garnering support and cooperation from all stakeholders, including port users, traders and residents in the surrounding areas.”

He also reaffirmed the NPA’s commitment to environmental sustainability and improved port efficiency:

“Indeed, the negative impact of pollution and encroachment on the ports cannot be ignored. This clean-up operation benefits not only port operations but also the surrounding communities and the environment as a whole.”

The NPA boss called on the public and all relevant stakeholders to support the ongoing operation:

“Management, therefore, calls on all and sundry to support and cooperate with this clean-up operation for a safer, more secure and environmentally friendly port environment.”
