House of Rep. Member Criticizes State Government, Calls for NASS Intervention Over Zamfara Killings
A House of Representatives member Aminu Jaji, has raised the alarm over bandit attacks in Zamfara State in recent times.
The lawmaker, who represents Kaura Namoda/Birnin Magaji Federal Constituency, while addressing journalists at the National Assembly, yesterday, revealed a horrifying incident in which bandits fed newborn twins to dogs.
Similarly, Coalition for Safer North-West Communities (CSNC) said the state was bleeding and called on the National Assembly, particularly lawmakers from Zamfara, to independently assess the state’s security situation and recommend a pathway to peace.
Jaji said over 200 of his constituents had been kidnapped by bandits in a wave of relentless attacks in recent weeks.
According to the lawmaker, the mother of the twins was abducted by the bandits while pregnant. After giving birth in captivity, he said the terrorists threw the infants to dogs, who devoured them.
“That is where we are now. That is the level of inhumanity we are facing,” he said.
He further recounted the heartbreaking story of an epileptic boy who was killed because he fell during a seizure.
“The bandit demanded that the boy be brought to him to be executed. The father, out of desperation, begged his son to surrender to save the rest of the family. The boy agreed and was shot dead.”
The lawmaker said the frequency and brutality of the attacks suggest a collapse of governance in many parts of Zamfara, calling on the Federal Government to do more in tackling the situation.
BLAMING the persistent insecurity in Zamfara on “lack of courage and gross administrative ineptitude” of the state government, the northern civic advocacy group said the worsening wave of kidnappings, killings and banditry in the state reflected a failure of leadership at the highest level of government.
President of the group, Murtala Gusau, stated yesterday that despite the deployment of military personnel and Federal Government interventions, “Zamfara remains one of the most dangerous states to live in, owing largely to the governor’s inability to take decisive action and coordinate effective security responses.
