Rights Group Slams Police Over ‘Mama Pee’ Detention, Calls for Probe of Abure’s Thugs

The Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC) has expressed deep concern over the physical assault on social media activist Precious Oruche, popularly known as Mama Pee, by suspected thugs allegedly linked to Labour Party’s Julius Abure.

Fusion Chronicle had earlier reported on Saturday that Mama Pee was attacked at the Benin Airport by thugs suspected to be loyal to Abure, following her reported confrontation with him at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, where she accused him of frustrating Nigerians.

According to eyewitnesses, Mama Pee saw Abure at the airport trying to board a plane and told him, “Is it not Julius Abure? You’re the one frustrating Nigerians.” Abure responded with, “How can?”

Mama Pee continued, “In case nobody has told you, you’re the one frustrating Nigerians. Are you not Julius Abure? What are you now doing with Labour Party? Police are looking for you. You’ve destroyed the Labour Party, and you’re entering an aeroplane? May God punish all of you.”

The situation escalated upon arrival at Benin Airport, where Mama Pee was attacked by suspected thugs loyal to Abure, inflicting her with bodily injuries.

Reacting to Mama Pee’s attack, in a statement made available to Fusion Chronicle Reporters, the statement described the incident as unacceptable and utterly condemnable, adding that what is more troubling is her detention by the Edo State Police Command, despite her being the victim of a violent attack.

In a statement signed by RULAAC’s Executive Director, Okechukwu Nwanguma, the organisation condemned the police’s action, describing it as “unprofessional, unjust, and undermines public confidence in the police.”

The organisation reminded the Nigeria Police Force of its constitutional duty to protect all citizens without fear or favour, regardless of political affiliation or status.

“We strongly condemn any form of violence or intimidation as a tool of political contestation,” said RULAAC. “The police must demonstrate their loyalty to the Constitution, the rule of law, and the rights of citizens—not to individuals or partisan interests.”

“Neutrality, fairness, and professionalism are essential to restoring public trust in law enforcement and ensuring that the police do not become tools in political rivalries,” the organisation emphasised.

The organisation, however, called on the Inspector-General of Police and the Edo State Commissioner of Police to immediately release Mama Pee from custody, as there is no evidence to suggest that she has committed any offense known to the law.

RULAAC also demanded an impartial and thorough investigation into the reported attack on Mama Pee, ensuring that all those responsible are identified and prosecuted.

“We demand an impartial and thorough investigation into the reported attack on Mama P, ensuring that all those responsible—whether political actors or hired thugs—are identified and prosecuted.

“Ensure professionalism and neutrality in handling this case and refrain from actions that could suggest bias or complicity in shielding powerful individuals from accountability.

“Violence and intimidation must not be allowed to take root in Nigeria’s political culture. The police must demonstrate their loyalty to the Constitution, the rule of law, and the rights of citizens—not to individuals or partisan interests,” the statement partly revealed.
