Rivers Fight:Chief Judge Recesses Fubara Impeachment Bid

The Rivers State Chief Judge announced a one-year recess, derailing lawmakers’ impeachment plans against Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
The move comes days after 27 pro-Wike lawmakers, reinstated by the Supreme Court and led by Martin Amaewhule, issued a 48-hour ultimatum for Fubara to present the 2025 budget or face removal.
Critical to the impeachment process, the Chief Judge’s signature is constitutionally required to formalize proceedings. With the judge’s extended leave, Fubara—who holds sole power to appoint an Acting Chief Judge—gains a strategic reprieve, effectively stalling the legislature’s efforts.
The crisis stems from a deepening rift between Fubara and allies of former Governor Nyesom Wike. Amaewhule’s faction, emboldened by the Supreme Court’s validation, had vowed to escalate pressure on the governor. However, the judiciary’s sudden vacancy leaves the Assembly in limbo, sparking debates over constitutional checks and balances.
