Segilola Mining Launches Livelihood Programme to Empower Osun Communities with Cocoa and Oil Palm Support

Segilola Resources Operating Limited (SROL), Nigeria’s first large-scale gold mining company and a subsidiary of Thor Explorations (Thor), has reaffirmed its commitment to community development by launching the second phase of its Livelihood Restoration Programme (LRP) in Osun State.

The launch event, held on July 1 at the Iperindo New Town Hall, drew participation from local residents, traditional leaders and stakeholders. The initiative aims to foster long-term economic resilience and promote sustainable agricultural practices in host communities.

This new phase of the LRP builds upon previous successes in 2023, which saw the establishment of fish and vegetable farms. The current focus is on two agricultural interventions—distribution of high-yield oil palm seedlings and rehabilitation of cocoa plantations.

Under Phase 1 of the programme, seven beneficiaries received 100 oil palm seedlings and agrochemicals. In Phase 2, 23 farmers were supported with 400 high-yield cocoa seedlings and essential agrochemicals to boost production and promote sustainable farming for long-term benefits

Speaking at the event, Sikiru Haruna, Senior Mining Engineer, emphasized the company’s broader vision for community upliftment:

“The Livelihood Restoration Programme reflects our belief that development should go beyond compensation. It is about enabling local farmers to build stronger, more resilient futures through sustainable agricultural practice. Investing in initiatives like these lays the foundation for economic independence and environmental stewardship.”

Nurudeen Bello, Executive Secretary in the Office of Natural and Mineral Resources, who represented Prof Lukmon Jimoda, Chairman of MIPREMCO, also praised the programme, noting its significant value to the community and the state at large.

Through the LRP, SROL continues to position itself as a model for responsible mining—creating shared value, fostering environmental sustainability and empowering local communities with tools for economic growth that will serve both present and future generations.
