Six Abducted on Kaduna–Birnin Gwari Road as Four Regain Freedom, Police Remain Silent

Six travellers were abducted during a weekend attack along the Kaduna–Birnin Gwari Road, with four of the victims later regaining their freedom amid complaints that the police have withheld key details surrounding the incident.

According to residents and relatives, the Kaduna State Police Command has failed to provide clear information on the attack, despite repeated inquiries by journalists and family members of the victims. The incident reportedly occurred near the Buruku and Udawa sections of the road.

A source in Birnin Gwari town said the victims were returning from a wedding when “armed bandits ambushed their vehicle, opening fire and abducting six individuals at gunpoint”.

The source also dismissed claims that a peace deal had been reached with armed groups operating in the area, noting that insecurity remains widespread.

As of the time of filing this report, four of the abducted persons identified as Shamsudeen Adamu, Abubakar Abubakar, Ibrahim Abbas and Abdullahi Walli have been released.

Accounts surrounding their freedom remain conflicting, as some locals claimed the victims escaped on their own, while other sources suggested that a ransom may have been paid.

Two of the abducted individuals are still being held, with their families saying they have received no official information regarding their condition or possible negotiations, a situation they believe is worsened by what they describe as deliberate silence from security agencies.

The source further revealed that bandits have “resumed attacks in Birnin Gwari villages, targeting residents and destroying farm produce,” underscoring persistent insecurity in the area.

Efforts to obtain an official response from the Kaduna State Police Command proved unsuccessful, as the spokesperson, Mansur Hassan, did not answer calls or respond to messages seeking clarification.
