Six Killed as Deadly Floods Ravage Gombe and Borno States

Tragedy has struck parts of Gombe and Borno states as floods triggered by heavy rainfall have claimed six lives and destroyed multiple homes.

In Gombe State, four individuals—mostly children and teenagers—have been confirmed dead due to drowning incidents across several communities. The Public Relations Officer of the Gombe State Police Command, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, disclosed the fatalities in a statement released Tuesday in Gombe.

According to the police spokesman, the drowning cases occurred in Hayin Kwarin-Misau, Bojude, Bajoga, and Difa communities located in Akko, Kwami, Funakaye and Yamaltu Deba Local Government Areas.

He explained that the victims were swept away in rivers, erosion sites, and poorly protected water channels amid the increasing downpours marking the onset of the rainy season.

In neighboring Borno State, two women died after a devastating flood hit Wovi Community in Damboa Local Government Area. The flood also left several families displaced after washing away houses in Rumirgo, Askira Uba Local Government Area.

Governor Babagana Zulum extended condolences to the affected families through a statement issued by his media aide, Mr. Dauda Iliya.

The latest disaster comes less than a year after massive floods submerged communities across Borno, killing dozens and destroying farmlands and homes.

As flood risks rise across the country, state governments are being urged to intensify disaster preparedness and climate resilience efforts.
