Nigerian Army Detains Investigative Journalist Fisayo Soyombo for Three Days in Port Harcourt

Renowned Nigerian investigative journalist Fisayo Soyombo has reportedly been detained by the Nigerian Army for three days in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Soyombo, known for his fearless reporting and exposés on corruption and institutional failures, was allegedly apprehended while carrying out an investigative assignment.
Details surrounding his detention remain unclear, but sources suggest it may be linked to his recent reporting on security issues and alleged human rights violations. Soyombo’s detention has sparked outrage among media organizations and human rights advocates, who are calling for his immediate release.
The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) condemned the incident, describing it as an attack on press freedom and democracy. “Journalists must be allowed to carry out their duties without fear of harassment or intimidation. The detention of Fisayo Soyombo is unacceptable and must be addressed immediately,” an NUJ spokesperson stated.
In a statement, Amnesty International Nigeria expressed concern over the increasing threats journalists face in the country, urging the authorities to respect the rights of media practitioners and ensure Soyombo’s safety.
This incident adds to growing concerns about press freedom in Nigeria, as journalists increasingly face intimidation, arrest, and violence in the line of duty. Soyombo’s plight highlights the ongoing challenges facing investigative journalism in a complex and politically sensitive environment.
Efforts to reach the Nigerian Army for comment have been unsuccessful, as no official statement has been released regarding the matter. Meanwhile, calls for Soyombo’s release continue to gain momentum, with many urging the government to prioritize the protection of journalists and uphold the rule of law.
